Subliminal Message Secrets
What is a Subliminal Message?
A subliminal message is any
type of information or signal that can be presented to the human mind
below the normal level of awareness. Subliminal is defined as:
“Not rising above the threshold of consciousness; designed to act on
the mind at a subconscious level”. (Webster's Encyclopedic
Dictionary)
Subliminal is derived from “sub” (meaning below) and “limen”, (Latin for
threshold).
Subliminal messages can actually be heard, seen or felt. However,
because they are either at a low volume, presented extremely quickly or
masked, it is unlikely that there will be awareness of them unless
paying extremely close attention.
The messages are within the limits of physical perception, but below the
level of normal consciousness. Delivered properly, they are received
directly by the subconscious mind. Their potential power exists because
the subliminal messages are not censored or judged by the conscious
mind.
Subliminal Messages and the Subconscious Mind
The
definition of subliminal relies on the assumption that the human mind
consists of two major components; the conscious mind and the
subconscious mind. The conscious mind represents normal waking awareness
and provides the abilities to reason, analyze, decide and focus as
directed.
The subconscious mind acts as a storehouse for all the events and
beliefs encountered and developed throughout a lifetime. It has limited
reasoning capabilities but remarkable capacity for recording even the
smallest details of the past.
The details of these memories can be accessed and this has been proven
by placing subjects into a trance state using hypnotic age regression.
There are other characteristics of the subconscious mind which affect
how subliminal messages can be of benefit.
The Purpose of Subliminal Messages
The goal
behind the use of subliminal messages is to bypass the conscious mind
and submit suggestions directly into the subconscious mind without any
reasoning or judgment by the conscious mind. The subliminal messages are
in almost all cases either auditory or visual.
By being exposed to subliminal messages repeatedly, the expected result
is that change is experienced at the subconscious level. Once this
change is accepted into the subconscious mind, a person would act
differently without necessarily knowing why.
They would feel an inclination to choose one action over another because
the subliminal messages had been accepted at the subconscious level.
This is similar but different from how hypnotic suggestions work.
The changes that may occur could be virtually anything from a
experiencing a higher degree of confidence, a desire to exercise, a
preference to vote differently, a choice to purchase one product over
another and countless others.
Why Use Subliminal Messages?
Even the
possibility of introducing changes in people by using subliminal
messages is profound. It suggests that an individual or group could be
effortlessly influenced with or even without their knowledge.
This explains the continuing interest in subliminal messaging. If it is
possible to influence people, someone or some group may be highly
motivated in using subliminal messages to their benefit.
The subliminal messages that a person could be exposed to are either
private or public. Privately, a person chooses to receive subliminal
messages under their own direction. Publicly, they enter an environment
in which they may have little or no control over the messages.
How Subliminal Messages Cause Change
Messages
subliminally introduced into the subconscious mind can affect the
actions that a person takes. The subliminal messages act to enter new
programming into the subconscious mind. Old beliefs and fears are
gradually eliminated and replaced by more positive programs.
The result would be that a person believed, felt and acted differently
in contrast to their old patterns. They would behave differently because
the subconscious mind would send back signals to the conscious mind
encouraging them to exercise or eat in a healthy manner, if that was the
content of the subliminal messages.
Signals from the subconscious may surface as feelings, desires or even
urges to perform certain actions. These subconscious signals are useful
if it is understood how to recognize subconscious messages and act on
them.
The only reason that a subliminal message may not be accepted by the
subconscious mind is if there are blocks that it uses for protection. A
block or barrier may be caused by an upsetting experience that the
subconscious remembers but the conscious mind has forgotten.
As an example, if a person was attacked by a dog in their childhood the
memory may have since been consciously forgotten. If as an adult they
demonstrated a fear of dogs, it may be that their subconscious mind
still believes that dogs are dangerous. It would send warning messages
back to the conscious mind in the form of fear in order to protect
itself whenever a dog was nearby.
A person may have none or several subconscious fears or beliefs that can
prevent them from achieving their goals. It can be almost impossible to
succeed in their goals unless the subconscious blocks are first removed.
It may be important to learn how to identify and remove subconscious
barriers before using any subliminal program.
Who Uses Subliminal Messages?
Subliminal messages can be initiated from a person who has decided to
change some aspect of their life, or from another group of people applying
it for their own purposes.
A group may decide to introduce subliminal messages in order to
change the attitude of the targeted population. It may be a subliminal
message embedded in the music played in a shopping mall stating “I am an
honest person” in order to reduce incidences of shoplifting or crime.
Advertising agencies have been targeted as being suspects in using
subliminal advertising for decades. They are easy to focus on because
they exist primarily to create messages that influence the purchasing
decisions that people make. This in no manner is to suggest that they or
any other company is presently using subliminal messages to influence
people.
Types of Subliminal Messages
There
are only two major types of subliminal messages that are used to
introduce changes in a person. The most commonly used form involves the
use of audio recordings containing verbal subliminal messages. Less
commonly used are visual subliminal textual messages embedded within
displayed images on a computer screen or video recordings.
Audio subliminal recordings are normally delivered on audio CDs, audio
cassette tapes or as compressed audio files. There are many other
characteristics of audio subliminal messages that are important to be
aware of before choosing to use them.
Visual subliminal messages are presented as short text messages flashed
at regular intervals on either a computer monitor or television screen.
The messages are presented rapidly, repeatedly and their content based
on the subject of interest. In most cases, display of the subliminal
messages is controlled by a computer software program.
There are advantages and disadvantages in selecting either type. Audio
subliminal recordings do not require any attention or effort. They can
be listened to while resting or being active, depending on which is
preferred.
Subliminal messages delivered visually are only of benefit if they are
visible. This means that it is necessary to actively view the display
presenting them. This is an advantage if using a computer because the visual
messages would not interfere with other tasks being performed.
Both visual and audio subliminal messages can be used to introduce
changes and even at the same time. An audio subliminal recording could
be listened to while running a computer program to display visual
subliminal messages.
